https://www.reddit.com/r/germany/wiki/living/housing Make sure before you visit that you have all the paperwork that will reassure the landlord that you will be a trustworthy tenant:
- German bank account at https://n26.de if you are in a hurry, all online via mobile phone
- Third party liability insurance, not mandatory but so important in Germany, https://haftpflichthelden.de if you are in a hurry, all online
- Schufa bonitätsauskunft, the credit rating. But hey, you don't live in Germany so you don't have one, but you need one. There is a loophole, go to any postbank (you will need a friend with a German Debit Card for payment usually €30) and ask for one (sometime you will need an appointment) and hand them your passport. What you will get back is a report stating you don't have one (hence no debts in Germany) and that is usually enough
- Copies of your identification papers
After finding a flat, rush to https://service.berlin.de/dienstleistung/120686/ to book an appointment to register Anmeldung with the local authorities, better a month before actually moving in as there is a huge backlog. Once you get flat keys, ask the landlord to provide a 'moving-in certificate'. Having done this you will receive your tax-id within three weeks which your employer will need in order to be able to pay you. Research the German Health Insurance system and register with a KrankenKasse, which will give you a social security number. Moving in with a family? The public system will get your relatives insured at no cost. Moving in with children, time to apply for Kindergeld https://www.kindergeld.org, also in English.
